Tesla generates $1.5B of cash in Q3 while starting Optimus production and growing Robotaxi miles eightfold.
Wall Street expected Tesla to burn about $4.9B in the quarter; instead it cut its 2026 capex plan to about $20B and still put robots on a production line. Revenue was flat and profit fell as spending on AI, chips and robots rose.
The daily context behind $TSLA and $SPCX, in plain English.
01What's new today
The freshest updates first, each with what is still unknown and which bet it moves.
Tesla turns $1.5B of free cash flow when Wall Street expected it to burn about $4.9B
Tesla's Q3 free cash flow was $1.53B against a consensus of about negative $4.9B, because capex came in at $4.73B rather than the roughly $8B expected (Yahoo Finance). Tesla cut its 2026 capex guidance to about $20B from more than $25B and said it will fund it mainly from operating cash flow, which was $6.26B. Cash and investments rose to $45.4B, and Tesla has $30B of new credit lines it does not plan to draw this year. Why it matters: cash from today's business is paying for the robot, chip and robotaxi build-out without new borrowing so far. Still unknown: Musk said capex grows next year and reaches "tens of billions" in 2028.

Revenue is flat at $28.05B and profit falls as Tesla spends on what comes next
Q3 revenue was $28.05B, flat from a year earlier and just under the $28.13B consensus; non-GAAP EPS was $0.48 vs about $0.44 expected. GAAP net income fell to $787M from $1.37B and operating income to $718M as R&D for AI compute, chips, Optimus, Megapack 3 and Semi rose; the CFO said operating costs keep climbing until those products are selling. Deliveries were 486,532 with the largest order backlog in four years, and Tesla said battery supply, not demand, limited output. Auto gross margin excluding credits improved to 18.1% from 16.3%.

Optimus production starts in Fremont; outside customers likely around the end of 2027
Tesla said Optimus production began on its high-volume Fremont line, its first production-quality bots, and that the process is "suitable for a commercial product." Musk said most of a 1 million-a-year line is installed, but reaching 20,000 a week will take "at least a year, maybe a little longer," with deliveries outside Tesla likely toward the end of 2027. The hand is still the hardest part, and the AI5 chip goes into Optimus around April 2027. This is the step that has to come before robots do paid work, not the finish line. Robotaxi miles up eightfold in a quarter; Cybercab heads to Dallas next month
Tesla reported nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles at Sep 30, up eightfold in the quarter, and Musk said the Austin Cybercab fleet is 10x its size at the Sep 3 launch. Ashok Elluswamy said Cybercab launches in Dallas next month, 24/7 service is targeted by year-end, and customer-owned cars could join the fleet around Q2 2027. Musk said Robotaxi revenue becomes noticeable around Q2 2027. Still unknown: ride counts and cost per mile (Tesla is not yet at its $0.30 goal), and Tesla's sworn Cybercab answers to NHTSA are due Oct 30.

FSD is now the main reason people buy a Tesla, with 1.74M paying
Active FSD subscriptions reached 1.74M, up from 1.48M in Q2, and over 75% of North American Q3 deliveries signed up for paid FSD at delivery, about 20 points more than in Q2, even with a free first month. Half of paying FSD customers are now on subscriptions. FSD (Supervised) is approved in nine EU countries, and Musk said he would be surprised if EU-wide approval takes longer than Q1 2027, a timeline Tesla does not control. Tesla says it will start disclosing FSD revenue and churn as it scales.

Megapacks almost sold out for 2027 as data centers buy storage
Tesla deployed 13.7 GWh of storage in Q3, up from 12.5 GWh a year earlier, and energy gross margin jumped to 33.1% from 20.4%, partly from tariff refunds and a supplier warranty reimbursement that may not repeat. Megafactory Texas started production with 50 GWh of planned capacity, and the first Megapacks built with Tesla's own Nevada LFP cells shipped. Musk said Megapacks are "almost sold out" for 2027; Tesla ties the demand to data centers needing power. Still unknown: how much of the margin holds once the one-time items roll off.

Terafab needs "tens of billions," and Tesla and SpaceX have not settled who pays
On Tesla's call, Musk put Terafab equipment spending at "tens of billions" through early 2028 and probably more than $100B long term, and said Tesla and SpaceX still have to work out the split. The research fab in Austin starts commissioning machinery in the first half of 2027, with a first test chip around May or June and volume around Q3 2028 (an aspiration, he said). The CFO said most first equipment orders are placed. Separately, Tesla plans 400 MW of its own AI training compute by year-end.

Semi enters volume production; Musk targets 5 million vehicles a year by about 2030
Tesla said volume production of the Semi began on a 25,000-a-year line in Nevada, with the top version rated at 500 miles at full 82,000-lb weight. Musk said Tesla is aiming for about 5 million vehicles a year by around 2030, using existing factories before building new ones, and Tesla has applied for permits to expand Berlin. Q3 production was 464,391 vehicles. Still unknown: Semi delivery numbers and customer pricing.
