SpaceX turns a $4.4B profit as renting out AI compute becomes its biggest business

SpaceX's Q3 revenue rose 161% from a year earlier to $14.6B, well above the $12.72B analysts expected (LSEG, via Reuters). Net income was $4.4B, or 35 cents a share, against a $1.1B loss a year ago; operating income was $2.8B, with the rest from interest income, other gains and a tax benefit. The AI segment brought in $7.56B, up from $2.56B in Q2, mostly from compute rented to Anthropic, Google and Reflection AI, plus $608M from Cursor, and it turned a $431M operating profit after $1.2B of Cursor-related stock pay. Still unknown: how much of the jump repeats; the CFO said Q4 gross margins should look more like Q2's after one-time benefits in Q3.

The bill for all that compute: SpaceX plans to spend $35B to $40B in Q4 alone

Capital spending was $19.6B in Q3, $16.4B of it on AI, and the CFO guided Q4 to $35B-$40B as Memphis and Southaven sites come online. Nameplate compute was 1.7 GW at Sep 30, should reach nearly 2.2 GW by the end of October and 2.5 to 3 GW by year-end. SpaceX guided Q1 2027 revenue to $33B-$37B, reported a $63B backlog with about $42B due within a year, and reaffirmed its $100B annualized-revenue goal based on December. Musk floated $500B to $1T of annual recurring revenue by the end of 2027, which he and Shotwell themselves called a "crazy note"; treat it as an aspiration, not guidance.

Starlink adds 1.6M subscribers and earns more per customer

Starlink ended Q3 with 13.6M consumer subscribers, up from 12.0M in Q2 and ahead of the 12.19M analysts expected (Reuters). Connectivity revenue was $5.25B, up 69% from a year earlier, and operating income was $2.37B, up 99%. Monthly revenue per consumer subscriber rose to $69 from $66, after falling for years as cheaper plans spread abroad. Starlink is contracted on 12,000 aircraft, per Shotwell, with more than 3,800 installed. It is no longer SpaceX's largest segment by revenue, but it is still by far the biggest profit.

Starship Flight 15 next month will try to catch both stages

Musk said Flight 15 is expected next month and will try to catch both the Super Heavy booster and the ship at the tower, calling success "more likely than not" but not guaranteed; SpaceX said it expects the FAA license to cover both catches. The targets: refly a ship by early 2027, try on-orbit refueling early next year, fly weekly at some point in the first half of 2027 and twice weekly or more by the end of 2027. Flight 14 was the first revenue-generating Starship mission, carrying 26 Starlink V3 satellites. SpaceX also said it will begin flying Starmind satellites in 2027. Still unknown: the Flight 15 date and whether the FAA license includes the ship catch.

Grok Bot more than doubles to 800,000 paid weekly users, and X ad revenue grows 19%

SpaceX said Grok Bot reached 800,000 paid weekly users earlier this month, more than double the month before, and Musk said enterprise Grok Bot should be in wide deployment within a few weeks; he called it the fastest-growing product he has seen. X advertising revenue was $538M in Q3, up 19% from a year earlier and up from $367M in Q2, after a new ad platform launched last quarter. Customers paying more than $1M a year rose 50% in the quarter on a pro forma basis. Still unknown: X subscriber counts and how much revenue Grok subscriptions bring in on their own.

Starlink Mobile passes 22 million monthly users; own US service targeted for early 2028

Starlink Mobile ended Q3 with more than 22 million monthly users, up 37% in the quarter, after new carrier launches in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kazakhstan and Costa Rica. Shotwell said the priority is flying the Mobile V2 constellation through 2027 and using newly bought spectrum to turn on service in early 2028. The 800 MHz license deal signed Oct 8 is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulators. Still unknown: pricing, and whether SpaceX sells phone plans directly or through carriers.

Musk puts dates on Terafab: a test chip mid-2027, volume production around Q3 2028

On the SpaceX call, Musk gave internal targets with what he called big error bars: a first working test chip, a simple memory chip to prove out the line, around May or June 2027 at the research fab in Austin, and volume production around Q3 2028 at the main Terafab site at Gibbons Creek, Texas. He called the dates "very aggressive" and credited ASML and other suppliers for speeding up equipment deliveries. Nothing has been produced yet.

Memphis rejects a one-year data-center moratorium, then passes a substitute

The Memphis City Council's one-year moratorium on new data centers failed on a 6-6 tie on Oct 20, with one member absent. The council then passed a substitute ordinance that reports describe differently: CBS says it halts new data-center construction for 135 days, while WSMV describes new rules requiring closed-loop cooling and limiting local water use. Neither would shut existing operations. On the same day, a Mississippi federal judge blocked the Trump administration's bid to dismiss the NAACP lawsuit over the gas turbines powering SpaceX's Southaven site (CBS). Still unknown: the final ordinance text and whether it slows SpaceX's Memphis-area build-out.
