Musk pledges a SpaceX share to every kid in America, on the eve of SpaceX's Q3 report.
No date, mechanism or account type yet, but at about 73M American kids it is roughly $10B+ of stock. Tomorrow SpaceX reports, with spending the number to watch and a new question: is SpaceX a compute landlord or a capacity-short tenant? Washington threatens Europe over Starlink's phone spectrum, and Starship Flight 15 aims for a double catch.
The daily context behind $TSLA and $SPCX, in plain English.
01What's new today
The freshest updates first, each with what is still unknown and which bet it moves.
Musk: "Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America"
At 2:52 AM CT on Oct 19, Musk posted: "Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many." It followed his reply to Anthropic's Oct 18 pledge of 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund, where he wrote "I recommend giving the shares directly to the public. This is what I will be doing." With about 73.1M Americans under 18 (Census Bureau estimate), one share each would be roughly $10B+ of stock at recent prices, from Musk's own holdings. Still unknown: how, when and into what kind of account the shares would go; no details have been disclosed.

SpaceX reports tomorrow: Wall Street expects sales up about 65%, but spending is the number to watch
Bloomberg consensus, cited by Pepperstone on Oct 19, calls for Q3 revenue of $12.89B, up about 65% from Q2's $7.81B, with adjusted EBITDA of $6.62B and adjusted EPS of about $0.15. AI is expected near $6.4B and Starlink near $4.9B on 14.3M consumer subscribers. Capex is forecast at $19.61B, up from $18.37B in Q2, which leaves free cash flow near negative $11.6B. Contracted compute already runs $41.1B a year, including a fourth hosting deal worth about $1.11B a month that starts billing Dec 1, CFO Bret Johnsen said in September. Still unknown: whether AI turns a profit, what the capex outlook is, and whether that fourth customer gets named.

Musk: even SpaceX struggles to rent extra AI compute, as AI debt markets wobble
On Oct 18 Musk posted a meme captioned "What it's like trying to rent AI/SI compute," then wrote that it "describes the conversation SpaceX has had when we have tried to rent inference compute from AWS, GCP or anyone," so it could shift load off its own training clusters. Scarce capacity supports the rents SpaceX charges customers like Anthropic and Google. The money side is getting tighter: CoreWeave bonds sold in June at a 9.675% yield traded near 15% last week, which 9fin's Max Frumes called "the canary in the coal mine" for AI credit. SpaceX's own $20B bridge loan matures in September 2027. Still unknown: is SpaceX a landlord or a capacity-short tenant? It rents Colossus capacity to Anthropic ($1.25B a month), and Google's rental starts this month, yet it says it cannot rent extra inference compute for itself. Do the rentals squeeze Grok? Something to listen for on Tuesday's call.

Washington threatens Europe over Starlink's phone spectrum, and the Ukraine row escalates
US Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder told the Financial Times, in an interview published Oct 18, that European companies "should be wary" of retaliation that could be "very devastating" if Brussels reserves most of the 2 GHz satellite-to-phone band for European operators. The European Commission's May 27 proposal splits the band into three 10 MHz blocks when current licenses expire in 2027: one reserved for secure government use including the EU's IRIS² network, one for European startups, and only the third open to non-European operators such as SpaceX; the European Parliament and EU governments still have to agree. Starlink Mobile's direct-to-cell service is built around that band. The same day, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called Zelensky's charge that the US throttled Starshield in Ukraine "very reckless." Still unknown: what retaliation would look like, and whether the EU plan survives.

Starship Flight 15 is set for Nov 8 at the earliest, with a booster and Ship catch attempt
NASASpaceflight reported Oct 18 that SpaceX's latest schedule puts Flight 15 no earlier than Nov 8, and Musk has confirmed SpaceX will try to catch both the Super Heavy booster and the Ship. Ship 42 had its engines removed and went back for another cryo test before its static fire, possibly tied to the Raptor Vacuum software glitch Musk described after Flight 14. Booster 22 is waiting for its own static fire. Flight 16 is aimed at December and could be the first Starship launch from Florida's LC-39A, which would make five Starship launches in 2026. Still unknown: whether the engine work moves the date, and whether 39A is ready in time.

Tesla's Wednesday test is cash: quarterly capex is expected to more than triple
S&P Global Market Intelligence forecasts Q3 capital spending of $7.94B, up 253% from a year earlier, and free cash flow of about negative $4.09B; TradingView's preview puts capex near $7.5B against $2.3B a year ago. Tesla guided on Jul 22 to more than $25B of capex in 2026, rising for two to three more years for Robotaxi, Optimus, chips and solar. The call (4:30 PM CT, Oct 21) also comes with two federal reviews open: an NHTSA petition review of claims that about 1,000 robotaxis speed in active school zones (opened Oct 9; four incidents, no crashes or injuries; not a defect finding), and Cybercab safety answers due Oct 30. Still unknown: Robotaxi ride counts, and how much of the spending goes to AI and chips.

Reported: Musk says X usage is at an all-time high
On Oct 18 Musk wrote "X is seeing all-time high usage," quoting a fan account that cited Similarweb data: 13.43B website visits in Q3, up 6% from 12.67B in Q2. Similarweb has not published that quarterly figure itself, and website visits leave out app use. X has not released new user, subscriber or ad numbers; Q2 X ad revenue was $367M. Still unknown: whether more usage is turning into ad revenue and paid Grok and X subscriptions.
