Earnings week: SpaceX's AI rentals face their first full-quarter test Tuesday, and Tesla's FSD faces new safety questions before Wednesday.

Back in focus: SpaceX reports Tuesday, and Q3 is the first full quarter of Anthropic paying $1.25B a month
SpaceX posts Q3 results after the close on Oct 20 (audio webcast 3:30 PM CT). Its IPO filing shows Anthropic agreed on May 3 to pay $1.25B a month through May 2029 for Colossus 1 and 2, at a reduced fee during the May–June ramp, and either side can cancel on 90 days' notice; Musk later called it a 180-day lease. Q2 compute-rental revenue was $1.6B, all from Anthropic, per Deutsche Bank. Wall Street's Q3 consensus is about $12.86B in total revenue, up from $7.81B in Q2, with the AI segment at about $6.4B and connectivity at about $4.8B (TipRanks, Oct 12). Google's $920M a month and a $6.7B six-month deal both ramp from October, so they mostly land in Q4. Still unknown: whether AI turns a profit and whether new customers get named.

Musk: Optimus and Cybercab will be "the vast majority of Tesla's value." Tesla reports Wednesday
Early Sunday Musk wrote that "Optimus and Cybercab will be the vast majority of Tesla's value," and that only super intelligence, robots, solar power and mass to space scale to incredible size. The near-term numbers come Oct 21 (call 4:30 PM CT): Zacks consensus is EPS of about $0.44 on $27.8B revenue, down about 1% from a year earlier, and Zacks models auto gross margin at 17.3% and energy revenue at $3.76B. Q3 deliveries were 486,532 and storage deployments 13.7 GWh. Still unknown: Robotaxi ride counts, Optimus output and Cybercab production timing, none of which Tesla has published.

Driver says he was asleep on FSD when his Tesla hit a patrol car; NHTSA is investigating
The California Highway Patrol said a 22-year-old driver told officers he was asleep with FSD (Supervised) engaged when his Tesla sped past flares and cones and hit a parked patrol car on I-80 in Fairfield late on Oct 13. Two officers inside were seriously injured and released the next day. NHTSA said Oct 16 it is investigating. CHP said FSD "is an SAE Level 2 driver assistance system that requires continuous driver supervision" and is holding the driver, not Tesla, responsible. Tesla did not comment. Still unknown: what the car's data shows, and whether the probe widens to driver monitoring.

Ukraine says Starlink is still capped; Rubio says nobody ordered it; Poland plans its own network
On Oct 17 Zelensky said Starlink inside Ukraine still cuts out above 161 km/h, while the same terminals kept working at 180 km/h on EU roads, and called it "a planned operation." Secretary of State Marco Rubio said "nobody ordered that Starlink speed to be slowed down. It sort of happened," and that service is back to normal; Ukraine's chargé d'affaires told CBS Kyiv "cannot confirm" that. The same day Poland's deputy defence minister Cezary Tomczyk said Poland has first offers and secured funding for a "Polish or European Starlink," military first, with an initiative in the coming months. Still unknown: SpaceX's own explanation, and how much European demand shifts to home-grown networks.

Regulators weigh in on the flying Roadster; Tesla says delivery is not guaranteed
NHTSA told AFP on Oct 16 that the Roadster must not break federal vehicle safety rules and that it will keep watching and act if needed to protect drivers. The FAA said the thruster-equipped prototype does not meet its definition of an aircraft. Tesla's pre-order terms, reported Oct 17, say it "cannot guarantee when your vehicle will actually be delivered or if it will be delivered." Production is still targeted for 2028. Still unknown: price, and how the road version will be certified.

Back in focus: Memphis votes Tuesday on pausing new data centers
The Memphis City Council is set to take a final vote on Oct 20 on a 12-month moratorium on new data-center permits, after a 7-5 vote postponed it on Oct 6 and protests shut down that meeting. Rival proposals would instead add tiered review and strict water and cooling rules. Mayor Paul Young said SpaceXAI generated $54M in tax revenue for the city and county this year. Nearby Millington approved its own six-month pause on Oct 12. Still unknown: whether a pause would touch expansions at SpaceX's Colossus sites, or only brand-new projects.

Back in focus: analysts put a full Starlink Mobile network at more than $80B
Reuters reported Oct 16 that TD Cowen estimates building a US mobile network would cost more than $80B, adding to SpaceX's spending on Starship, AI and Terafab. SpaceX's regulatory filing lays out a hybrid plan: satellites that connect to phones, plus antennas on towers and rooftops. MoffettNathanson's Julie Zhu said "it's just hard to imagine that this is all going to get done within a decade," and T-Mobile's CTO said the spectrum would not match established networks. Still unknown: whether any carrier offers SpaceX wholesale access.
