Tesla's Roadster flies, with production set for 2028. Musk says the SpaceX-Nvidia Starmind computer ramps next year.
Tesla revealed a thruster-equipped Roadster at a SpaceX test site last night: 0-60 in 0.81 seconds, production in 2028, no price. Musk said the Starmind computer SpaceX is building with Nvidia reaches volume production next year, while Reuters reported the StarShield slowdown order came from inside the White House and senators asked for a probe.

01What's new today
The freshest updates first, each with what is still unknown and which bet it moves.
Tesla reveals the new Roadster: production in 2028, no price yet
On Oct 15 at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, Tesla unveiled the redesigned Roadster, built with SpaceX cold-gas thrusters. On stage it drove upside down on a ramp using fan suction, then used the thrusters to jump over a Semi and other Teslas. Tesla posted 0-60 mph in 0.81 seconds; vehicle engineering chief Lars Moravy said top speed is over 230 mph and range is over 300 miles, less than half the 620 miles promised in 2017. There are three trims: Performance ($50,000 deposit), Thrust ($250,000 deposit) and an invite-only, single-seat Rocket that Tesla says is not approved for public roads. The wings are driven by the Optimus actuator system. Production is set for 2028. Still unknown: the price, how 2017 deposits convert, and whether the Oct 21 Q3 call puts numbers on it.

StarShield fallout: Reuters says the slowdown order came from inside the White House
Reuters reported late Oct 15, citing two US officials and a Western official, that Defense Department leaders got a message from inside the White House that StarShield service for Ukraine's military needed to be slowed. A senior US official said "no such request was ever made by the president." On Oct 16 nine senators from both parties asked the Defense Department inspector general to investigate. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said Pete Hegseth assured him service is back up; a Ukrainian Defence Ministry source told Reuters terminals now work in motion, but only up to 100 mph (160 km/h). Still unknown: who gave the order, and whether the 100 mph cap stays.

Musk: the SpaceX-Nvidia Starmind computer reaches volume production next year
On the BG2 podcast published Oct 15, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the two engineering teams are building "a new type of server, a new type of architecture that might be super good in space and on Earth," and that Nvidia now counts SpaceX alongside its cloud-provider customers. Musk replied on X that the Star Mind computer "is far better than almost anyone expects and will reach volume production next year." To a clip saying he wants 10 gigawatts of compute by the end of 2027, Musk wrote: "Maybe more than 10GW." Nvidia said in August the first Starmind satellite will use an optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 rack, with first launches targeted for Q4 2027. Still unknown: whether 2027 volume means satellites in orbit or a ground server ramp first.

Huang calls Grok Bot demand "skyrocketing" as Amazon blocks the bot
In the same Oct 15 interview Huang said "the consumption for Grok Bot is really skyrocketing." Musk wrote that he has "never seen anything grow as fast," noting Grok Bot has no free tier. The friction: Amazon is now refusing Grok Bot orders, telling users that "continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use." Musk told users to buy elsewhere, mused "maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon," and said SpaceX will make users whole if Grok Bot botches a purchase or leaks a card; Teslarati notes that is a post on X, not a change to the published terms. Still unknown: paying-user numbers and how many retailers follow Amazon.

NHTSA data: five Robotaxi crashes with a remote operator driving
Electrek reported Oct 15 that Tesla's latest Standing General Order crash filings add two August incidents in Dallas and Austin where a remote support operator, not the autonomous system, was in control: one Model Y touched a parked SUV at about 0.4 mph, another hit a dumpster at about 1 mph. That makes five remote-operator crashes in the data, all at low speed with property damage only and no passengers hurt. Tesla now has 36 Robotaxi incident reports on file, up from 22 in July. Tesla does not disclose how often remote operators take over. Still unknown: that intervention rate, and whether regulators press on teleoperation.

Barclays: a Tesla-SpaceX merger could be announced before December
On Oct 15 Barclays analyst Dan Levy wrote that Musk could announce a merger before Tesla's 2026 annual meeting, which must be held by Dec 6, with SpaceX the likely buyer in an all-stock deal; another path is a deal in 6 to 12 months. He expects it to be pitched as AI integration and named Terafab as a driver: Tesla is building a $3B Austin research facility with a production plant estimated at about $16.8B, and Musk has said separate board approvals for Terafab could take "a while." Reuters noted some watchers saw the Roadster event as marketing for a tie-up. This is an analyst view; no deal has been announced.

Reliance answers Musk: "We welcome competition," and Jio waits too
On the morning of Oct 16 Reliance Industries said it welcomes satellite competition "including Starlink," its first official reply to Musk's post last week blaming "certain oligarchs" for Starlink's delay in India. Reliance said "Jio's own satellite services await clearances." India's Communications Ministry says all three licensees, Starlink, Jio Satcom and Eutelsat OneWeb, are at "broadly the same regulatory stage" while security assessments run. Still unknown: when the security reviews finish and spectrum is assigned.

Tesla Energy chief Mike Snyder steps down; a 1 GWh Taiwan order surfaces
The Wall Street Journal reported Oct 15 that Mike Snyder has stepped down as Tesla's vice president of energy and charging; AJ Booth, senior director of energy products engineering, will succeed him. Tesla did not comment to Reuters. Separately, Taiwan's Apollo Power disclosed an Oct 8 deal to buy 260 Megapack 2XL units, about 1 GWh, with deliveries from late 2027; local reports say only about 33 units are tied to signed customer agreements so far. Still unknown: whether the leadership change shifts energy strategy after Q3's 13.7 GWh storage miss.

EU moves to fast-track a European rival to SpaceX
Bloomberg reported Oct 15 that the EU is seeking to fast-track antitrust approval for Project Bromo, a planned venture joining the satellite businesses of Airbus, Thales and Leonardo to cut Europe's reliance on US providers, including SpaceX. The partners have not filed yet; officials expect a filing in the coming weeks, and a Phase 1 review runs just over a month. EU competition chief Teresa Ribera said approval is not automatic. Still unknown: whether Bromo ever fields broadband capacity that competes with Starlink on cost.

Back in focus: Deutsche Telekom's CEO doubts Starlink Mobile
On an Oct 12 webcast, reported Oct 15, Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges said, "We have 85,000 mobile antennas in America. [Musk] has to build those first," and warned carriers against cheap wholesale deals that would help SpaceX. Deutsche Telekom owns a majority of T-Mobile, Starlink's only US phone partner, and still plans Starlink satellite-to-phone service in several European markets in 2028. Still unknown: whether any US carrier gives SpaceX wholesale access before its own spectrum is usable.
